Nearly five months after competing in the 53rd Macau Grand Prix in November, Maro Engel will again take to the track for the first round of the 2007 Lloyds TSB Insurance British F3 International Series at Oulton Park this weekend.
The 22 year-old Mercedes backed driver is confident that his lack of testing will not affect his pace at the Cheshire circuit and is keen to start his season with a podium position.
Engel’s signing with the Carlin team in March was eagerly awaited by the motorsport fraternity, with Engel now considered one of the favourites for the title.
Despite limited testing, Engel is confident that he is well prepared for the season ahead, “We’ve only had two days testing in the run up to the first race, but we have managed to complete a substantial amount of work in that time, and of course I am already familiar with the team and my engineer, having raced with Carlin last year.
“The first qualifying session will be interesting, as that is typically where you see the true pace of your competitors. I had a good British F3 debut at Oulton Park last year, just missing out on a podium position, so I’m confident of a strong start to the season.”
Engel finished fifth in last year’s championship, recording eight podiums and a great win at the infamous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.
The first of three practice sessions will commence at 10.00 Friday morning, followed by two qualifying sessions on Saturday at 11.00 and 15.05. Engel and his team will have a day away from the track on Easter Sunday, before racing commences at 11.15 on Monday. Racing will resume at 16.30 in the afternoon for Race 2.
