TEAM NEWS: The Carlin F3 team head to Donington Park this weekend for the second round in the 2007 British F3 International Championship.
The team got its season off to a great start at the first race at Oulton Park two weeks ago, with driver Maro Engel taking the first win of 2007 and F3 rookies Sam Bird and Niall Breen scoring solid points on their debut.
The first races of the 2007 season have seen a high level of success for Carlin, with the team winning the opening race across its numerous championships. Henry Surtees began the trend, taking the rookie win at the Formula BMW opener at Brands Hatch, Maro Engel followed taking victory at Oulton Park, and Mikhail Aleshin completed the set with a win at the World Series by Renault opener in Monza. The team also reached another landmark in Monza last weekend, Mikhail Aleshin’s pole taking the team to a total of 100 pole positions across all championships.
The Carlin team is aiming to continue the good form this weekend, on the 1.9 mile long National Circuit at Donington Park. Donington is one of the UK’s oldest surviving race tracks and hosts rounds of the MotoGP, BTCC, LMS and British Superbikes as well as the British F3 championship.
It is a fast circuit with sweeping corners and medium to high downforce. The track has little grip, meaning the Carlin drivers will need the perfect set up to get the most out of their tyres. Oulton Park winner Maro Engel has happy memories of the track,
“I’m looking forward to going back to Donington as I recorded my first ever podium position there last year. It was fantastic to take the first win of the season at Oulton Park, and we should be capable of fighting for race wins again this weekend. I’d like to leave Donington with two podium positions, which is our aim at every race.” 2005 South American F3 champion
Alberto Valerio had a torrid start to his 2007 championship campaign, and is aiming to score his first points of the season at Donington this weekend, “I want to start my championship at Donington and forget about our weekend at Oulton Park, it was a difficult race for me and my team. We’re still in the early stages of the season, so there’s plenty of time for me to get back into the championship, although there is a little more pressure on me now, having scored no points at the last race. But I feel confident we’ll be back on form this weekend.”
“Oulton Park was a great start for the team. Maro did a fantastic job to take pole position and the win with such little testing,” said Team Principal Trevor Carlin. “Sam and Niall were also very impressive in their first ever F3 race, and I think we can expect a strong season from both of them. Alberto and Mario should show their true potential this weekend and get some points on the board after an unlucky start at Oulton Park.”
