TEAM NEWS: The Carlin team has enjoyed a great start to its 2007 campaign, with a high level of success across the Formula BMW, F3 and World Series by Renault championships. The team return this week from a victorious weekend in Bucharest where F3 rookie Sam Bird recorded the team’s 250th podium position with a third place in race one.
In eight race weekends across the Formula BMW, F3 and World Series by Renault championships so far this season, the Carlin teams have won a race in all but one event. Henry Surtees currently leads the way, with three wins in the Rookie Cup in Formula BMW UK.
The World Series team started off its season in the best possible fashion with 19 year-old Mikhail Aleshin taking victory in Monza. Team mate Sebastian Vettel matched this effort with a win at round two at the Nürburgring, taking the lead in the drivers’ championship. Carlin also tops the team standings ahead of round three in Monaco.
The Carlin F3 squad also started off their season with a win, Maro Engel taking the team’s first victory with a Mercedes engine. F3 rookie Sam Bird topped off a fantastic weekend for the team in Romania, taking his first victory in the championship to put him third in the drivers standing. Bird finished just ahead of fellow Carlin driver Niall Breen, to lead the team’s 28th one-two finish. The team left Romania with four trophies in total, after finishing second, third, fourth and fifth in race one and first and second in race two.
Bird’s third place finish earlier in the weekend was also a landmark for the team, as the 250th podium position in Carlin’s history. Former F1 driver and current F1 test driver Narain Karthikeyan recorded the team’s first podium with a third place finish in Spa in British F3 in 1998.
