DRIVER NEWS: Engel scores valuable points at Snetterton
DRIVER NEWS: Maro Engel secured a seventh and fourth place finish at Snetterton last weekend, adding more valuable points to his championship standings.
The 21 year-old German who won the season opener at Oulton Park, added 14 points to his season total so far, after his first DNF of the year at the last round in Romania.
The Mercedes backed driver qualified seventh for race one, but lost a place as the cars thundered into the first corner. Making up the place after Marko Asmer retired with a puncture, Engel crossed the line seventh to claim four championship points. In a positive result for the team, Engel’s Carlin team mates took a one-two-three finish.
Taking his fifth placed grid slot for the second race, Engel made a lightening start to pass Atte Mustonen into the first corner for fourth place. Engel put in an impressive performance to hold his position from fifth placed man Stephen Jelley while driving his car in dirty air trying to chase down team mate Sam Bird. Unable to find a way past, Engel took fourth place, just missing out on a podium position. Nevertheless, with two solid point scoring positions Engel was one of only seven drivers in the championship class to score points in both races.
Commenting on the weekend, Engel said, “It’s not quite what I was hoping for, it would have been nice to have finished in the top three, but it’s good to get some solid points for the championship. Most importantly we’re heading in the right direction, having made several improvements since Bucharest. “It was a great result for the team to get a 1-2-3 finish in race one, and obviously I’m very pleased for my team mates. Hopefully I’ll be joining them on the podium again soon. It’s encouraging to see Carlin at the top of the standings as the cars are obviously performing well.”
Currently fifth in the drivers’ championship, Engel will be back in racing action in three weeks for the fifth round at Monza on 23-24 June.
