TEAM NEWS: Ultimate on a High After Best Ever Grid Slot
Post Qualifying interview with Michael Devaney
TEAM NEWS: Ultimate Motorsport secured their best-ever grid position on their return to their home circuit of Silverstone when Michael Devaney finished third in qualifying for this weekend's eighth round of the 2007 Lloyds TSB Insurance British F3 International Series.
The new team, which returns to the UK this weekend after two races on the Continent, are chasing a maiden podium and Devaney put them in with a strong chance of achieving their aim when he hooked up his Mygale-Mercedes machine during Saturday's second grid-deciding session.
Irishman Devaney set a sizzling pace in sunny conditions to finish just 0.119s from pole position for Sunday's second race, having finished ninth in qualifying for the first. His team-mate Esteban Guerrieri struggled to find the speed in his car, however, and finished the two sessions in 14 th and 20th places overall.
Team Owner Barry Walsh said: "Brilliant! You can't get much better than that, can you? Let's wait and see tomorrow though - maybe tomorrow we can! Mick did a fantastic job out there. It is our best ever qualifying position by a long shot, and the whole team is ecstatic.
"Back in February, we launched the team at the British Racing Drivers Club here at Silverstone, so it is great to break into the top three on our return! It was a shame we could not do it with both cars, but that will come. Esteban can still do something from where he is, and we look forward to seeing what Mick can do!"
Devaney, who has never raced at the track before, built on the strong pace he showed in first qualifying to set his fastest lap while Argentine Guerrieri suffered from oversteer during the first session and struggled to cope with the car's performance over the bumps in the second.
"Fantastic! It's a great result for the team. I couldn't believe it when I saw P3. I thought some of the other cars would have another lap, but they didn't! We knew we had a bit of pace left after first quali and we certainly did! We are closer to the front, time-wise, than we have ever been. "That pace will come through in the race too. We are traditionally good off the line, although we have not been up against the guys at the front before, so we will see how we go. But it is pretty obvious what I will be aiming to do at the start! My dad scored an F3 race win here, so I have something to live up to!"
"Congratulations to Mick, it was a great result for the team. It was a shame we could not hook the car up the same for me, but that is just the way it goes. It was a bit of everything - bumps, brake knock-off, oversteer. We will work on the car to find some speed and see what we can do tomorrow." QUALIFYING TIMES
