TEAM NEWS: Third National Class Title for T-Sport

TEAM NEWS: Sergio Perez took T-Sport’s third British F3 National Class Championship win at Croft yesterday. The Mexican driver’s second place in race one was enough to take the title and he consolidated his great achievement with a dominant victory in the second of the weekend’s two F3 races.

Sergio started race one at Croft in second place behind Championship-challenger Frankie Cheng. He made a good start and set off after Cheng. At around two-thirds distance it looked like Sergio was in trouble when an ambitious move by Championship Class runner Ali Jackson tipped Sergio onto two wheels at the Hairpin but, just as it looked like Sergio would roll, his car landed back on four wheels and he set off again after the leaders. He fought his way back up to second but Cheng was too far ahead by this point. The second place was enough for Sergio to clinch the title and he crossed the line as 2007 British F3 National Class Champion. He was greeted by the T-Sport team; all dressed as Mexican bandits to celebrate his victory!

The second event was a typical Sergio Perez race. He started on pole and breezed through to his 12th win of the year!

Rodolfo Gonzalez by contrast had a rather difficult weekend, compared to his recent upturn in performance. He qualified down in 13th place for race one, struggling to get a good lap hooked up. The race result was better though as he managed to make his way up to eighth by avoiding the dramas that affected many of the other runners. He started race two from 11th place and ran in eighth for much of the race before Stephen Jelley slipped through on lap 22, knocking him down to ninth.

Salman Al Khalifa qualified in fourth place for both races at Croft. He took a great result in race one and joined Sergio up on the podium in third place. He then made a fantastic start in race two and was running right up in second place before a spin put his right back down the field. He recovered and made his way up to sixth for the chequered flag.

“We’re all delighted for Sergio,” said Team Principal, Russell Eacott. “He has worked hard this year and deserves the title. Rodolfo struggled this weekend so we need to work out how to get him back to the form he has been showing lately. Salman got a good result in race one and his small error in race two highlights just how competitive the National Class is.”

The final two rounds of the 2007 British F3 International Series take place at Rockingham in three weeks’ time (29/30 September).
