TEAM NEWS: Carlin squad determined ahead of season finale

TEAM NEWS: Carlin Motorsport head to Rockingham this weekend for the final round of the 2007 season.  Three times winners of the F3 championship, Carlin are determined to end the season on a high, after topping the time sheets at the official practice at Rockingham last week.

Over the 22 round season, the team have won five races; to add to the 73 races the team have won in British F3 since 1999.

Maro Engel started the season in the best possible fashion at the season opener at Oulton Park in April, taking victory in race one.  F3 rookie and revelation of the season Sam Bird was the next Carlin driver to stand on the top step, taking victory around the streets of Bucharest in Romania.

Round seven at Snetterton saw the Carlin team take their first podium lock out of the season, as rookie Niall Breen took a fantastic win ahead of team mates Sam Bird and Alberto Valerio.

Monza was the next venue on the F3 calendar, where the team took its second 1-2-3 finish and the fourth in the team’s history.  Another two podium positions in race two at Monza saw the team take an incredible run of 14 podiums from 18 races.

Ahead of Rockingham, there have been just four races this season without a Carlin driver on the podium.

Looking ahead to the season finale, Maro Engel is out to consolidate his second place in the championship, after a consistent season which has seen the Mercedes backed driver rack up seven podium positions.

BP Ultimate driver Sam Bird is aiming to take a clutch of points to reclaim third in the championship from Stephen Jelley after a run of races plagued by bad luck.  Fellow rookie Niall Breen will also be aiming to finish his first season of British F3 in the best possible fashion and extend his lead in the championship from sixth placed man Jonathan Kennard.

Mario Moraes, the youngest driver in the Carlin squad, will be hoping to join his team mates with a top three finish having finished in the top six at Thruxton and Croft.  Meanwhile fellow Brazilian Alberto Valerio is aiming for victory, having already stood on the second and third steps of the podium so far this season.

Carlin driver Alberto Valerio commented, “It’s a shame the season has passed so quickly, it’s been a great year.  We’ve had good results, bad results, but I have learnt so much.  Let’s see if I can put everything together and try to finally win a race!  I feel I’ve been chasing that win a little too much this year!

“The test at Rockingham went very well; I think our pace was very competitive.  Rockingham is a nice track; it’s quite a technical track and fun to drive, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Team Principal Trevor Carlin added, “Obviously the championship has been won by Marko [Asmer], but we will be heading to Rockingham aiming to consolidate and improve our standing in the championship.  All the drivers this season have done a great job and contributed something to the team.

“Maro, Sam and Niall are all chasing another victory, while Alberto is determined to take a win before the end of the season.  Mario has been improving constantly and is due a podium.  Our official test at Rockingham went extremely well, with Maro and Sam setting the fastest times in each session.  We’ll be aiming to continue that front-running pace this weekend.”
