RD9 QUALIFYING: Devaney Claims Maiden Pole for Ultimate and Mygale

Ireland's Michael Devaney scored the first ever Formula 3 pole position for Mygale and Ultimate Motorsport in a thrilling wet qualiying session for round 9 of the 2008 British F3 International Series. Nick Tandy made it an all Mygale front row in his best ever qualifying session in his short British F3 career.  Jay Bridger took the National Class pole ending Andy Meyrick's 100% qualifying record, the Welshman finishing 4th in class and outside the top 20 overall.

The 30-minute session started in the pouring Norfolk rain with Marcus Ericsson setting th eearly pace ahead of Atte Mustonen and sergio Perez but with just one flying lap on the board the red flags came out to halt qualifying as one of the Ultimate Mygales was beached on the inside kerb at the Bomb Hole.

With the car safely removed qualifying resumed and the times started to tumble. Ericsson held onto the top spot for the next 5-minutes as the places behind the Swede changed every few seconds with Sam Abay, Sebastian Hohenthal and Michael Devaney all battling for the front row position.  With 20 minutes of the session remaining Atte Mustonen posted a 1m14.316 lap to move to the top of the timing sheets but the Finn was quickly displaced by first Ericsson and then Nick Tandy, with Perez and Alguersuari pushing Mustonen futher down the order.

Two minutes elapsed before Devaney went two tenths quicker than Tandy with a 1m13.504s lap but as the JTR Marshal Westland Mygale crossed the line Tandy went back to the top as he stopped the clock with a 1m13.468s lap.  With Alguersuari moving into second place ahead of Devaney the top three drivers were split by just 0.036 seconds.  Devaney wasn't finished and he posted the fastest lap of the session on his next lap to move into pole position by just 0.025 seconds ahead of Tandy and 0.057 seconds ahead of Alguersuari.  The Spaniards Red Bull team mate Brendon Hartley made it an all Carlin second row, with Sebastian Hohenthal heading row 3 just ahead of championship leader Sergio Perez.

Jay Bridger was the quickest in the National Class by far, revelling in the wet conditions and never dropping out of the top ten overall on his Fluid Motorsport teams home track.  Steven Guerrero had his best qualifying session, finishing 6 places ahead of Stefan Wilson.
