Marcus Ericcson took his second pole position of the year for Round 13 on the full Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch and then promtly lost it when he and four other drivers were handed penalties by the Clerk of the Course for yellow flag infringements during the 30-minute session.
Jaime Alguersuari took the initiative from the start of the session, putting in a 1m18.666 and improving to a 1m17.734 two laps later. Sergio Perez kept pace with the Spaniard, ending his 4th lap just 0.046 seconds behind Alguersuari and 0.136 ahead of Atte Mustonen.
With 10 minutes of the session completed Oliver Turvey made his bid for the top spot but lost out within a few minutes to Alguersuari who improved to head the times buy over 0.4 of a second. Mustonen closed the gap with Marcus Ericsson putting in a 1m17.486 to move into 3rd place.
As the session entered the final 5 minutes Sam Abay moved into 4th spot ahead of Turvey but on the next lap Ericsson put in the fastest lap of the session, claiming pole position with a 1m17.112.
However during the session yellow flags were waved after a car went off on the Grand Prix loop near Sheene Curve. A number of drivers were judged to have either set their fastest laps while the flags were out or hadn't slowed suffiently enough. Cars 18 (Sam Abay) and Car 11 (Alastair Jackson) had their time disallowed due to the severity of their infringements while cars 3 (Brendon Hartley), 8 (Marcus Ericsson) and 24 (John Martin) were handed time penalties that dropped them down the order.
In the National Class Steven Guerrero made the running for almost all of the 30-minute session but with a few minutes to go Jay Bridger put in a 1m19.351 to claim the Pole Position by just 0.012s ahead of the Columbian. Stefan Wilson was third and Jonathan Legris was 4th, a good result on his debut and for the Litespeed SLC R1 chassis on only the teams third outing.
