RD15 Qualifying: Turvey Tops Spa Times to Claim Maiden Pole

Oliver Turvey claimed his British F3 pole at Spa Francorchamps, heading a Carlin 1-2-3-4 with Brendon Hartley, Jaime Alguersuari and Sam Abay finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.  The Racing Steps Foundation driver was the fastest driver in both Free Practice sessions earlier today and converted this pace when it counted.  Jay Bridger took his fourth National Class pole, edging out Salman Al Khalifa and Steven Guerrero.

The 30-minute session began with the usual long wait for the first drivers to complete their first flying lap of the Spa circuit and it was Marcus Ericsson (#8 Fortec) who set the early pace with a 2m17.364 on his opening lap followed by a 2m16.923 the next time round.

Nick Tandy (#28 JTR) went three hundredths faster than Ericsson when he crossed the line but a few seconds later Atte Mustonen (#26 Double R) went six hundredths quicker still.

Ericsson responded on the next lap to retake provisional pole position with a 2m16.194, with John Martin (#24 Double R) jumping into second position.

Sam Abay and Oliver Turvey had both stayed in the pits for the first ten minutes of the session but on their first flying laps Abay posted the first sub 2m16s lap to move to the top of time sheets, with Turvey in second place just two tenths behind.

Carlin teammates Brendon Hartley and Jaime Alguersuari also made their first laps of the session count as Hartley slotted in behind Turvey in the times and Alguersuari then demoted Hartley as Turvey put in a 2m15.361s lap to stake his claim on the top spot.

In the National Class Salman Al Khalifa (#57 T Sport) was holding the provisional pole for the early part of the session then Jay Bridger put in 2m17.705s lap to push the Bahraini driver into second spot.

As the session drew to a close, Turvey was holding onto the top spot despite a concerted effort by Hartley which was ultimately good enough for second place.  Jaime Alguersuari was third but Sam Abay was pushed down to 6th as Mustonen and then Tandy went quicker on their final laps.

At the flag that was the order on the screen but Mustonen, Tandy and Bridger were judged to have gained time out on circuit by cutting a corner and their final times were disallowed, pushing Mustonen down to 7th, Tandy down to 8th and Bridger down to 19th but his next best time was still good enough for him to hang onto the National Class pole.

Qualifying for Round 16 will take place at 10:05 local time on Friday 1 August, with Round 15 due to start at 15:55.  Round 16 will take place at 13:00 on Saturday, the final support race before the Total 24 Hours of Spa.
