TEAM: T Sport in Three Way Fight for Title

TEAM NEWS: After last weekend’s racing at Silverstone, T-Sport’s Sergio Perez is now in a three-way fight for the British F3 International Series title.  The Mexican driver finished ahead of his usual rival, Jaime Alguersuari, at Silverstone, but two strong performances from Oliver Turvey have moved the British driver into the Championship lead, closely followed by Perez and then Alguersuari.

Sergio’s pace was good during the practice sessions on Friday but set-up changes went the wrong way and he struggled in the first qualifying session, finishing in sixth place. Matters improved for session two and he had the pace but didn’t quite hook up all three sectors and had to settle for fifth. He rocketed off the line in race one, moving up to fourth, and held position until the chequered flag. This was quite an achievement as it transpired he completed the entire race with two bent front wishbones after lap one contact with John Martin.  This result put Sergio back in the lead of the Championship.  Another fourth place finish in race two consolidated his lead over Alguersuari but Oliver Turvey’s win put at the top of the title fight with just four more races to go.

Over in the national class, both Salman Al Khalifa and Steven Guerrero struggled in the first qualifying session, taking fifth and fourth places respectively. In qualifying two Salman improved to third and Steven to fourth.

Salman’s start in race one was hampered by a clutch problem and he then got squeezed out so he had to battle his way back up through the field to fifth….exactly where he started. He was running well in second place in race two and saw an opportunity to challenge Stefan Wilson for the lead. Unfortunately both cars spun out but Sal was able to rejoin and came home in third, taking fastest lap along the way.

Steven came away from Silverstone with two fourth place finishes and now sits in second place in the National Class Championship

“We could’ve and should’ve been better but Silverstone International is such a small circuit for an F3 car; the slightest error in qualifying makes a huge difference to grid positions as the times are so close. We’re looking forward to the sunshine of Bucharest now where we hope to get Sergio back on top.”

The next two rounds of the 2008 British F3 International Series take place this weekend in Bucharest, Romania.
