Volkswagen will race in the 2009 Cooper Tires British F3 International Series for the first time since 1989, supplying race winners T-Sport and one other team to be announced in the coming weeks.
T-Sport finished 4th in the 2008 Series with Mexican Sergio Perez, scoring their first International Class win at Croft in April, followed by three further victories at Monza and Brands Hatch using the Neil Brown Engineering prepared Mugen-Honda powerplant. VW finished their first season in Formula 3 as runners up in the Euro Series with Edoardo Mortara and will expand into the British Series with full backing for the teams using the 2-litre engine.
“This is a great deal for us,” said T-Sport Team Principal Russell Eacott. “Neil Brown Engineering did a fantastic job this year but the package offered to us by VW offers us much more and will give T-Sport the opportunity to become a regular title contender.”
Volkswagen Motorsport Boss Kris Nissen told Autosport Magazine, “We will supply two teams in British F3 next season. One will be T-Sport and we will announce the other in two weeks. Of course we hope to win races in Britain next season, and hope that more teams in England will want VW engines. We have a lot of trust in the teams we will be working with and we are looking forward to it.”
